While I havent used WSB in a production environment yet, I currently have 2.6 and 2.7 in testing and love them, way simple to use.

For 3 I do have a few suggestions/comments:
1) Great idea using SMARTY my current p[roduction cms uses it an dits great once you learn how to implement it.
2) I'd liek ot see some speration of components (menus etc) ie have an index.php, memnu.php, etc etc.  that way itd be easier to syle things and implient things liek mulitipler menus and horizontla menus.  And since smarty will be used it'd be as simple as adding the apporpritae smarty tags {menu_1} {menu_s} and so on.
3)  A proper forum would be great again easier to do with use of smarty.
4)  Last it would be nice to be abel to install/upgarde module right fomr the backend with out having to downlaod them form here first.  My current cms has this feature and its great as you can see whats new and what needs to be upgraded and do so by clicking the link.  This would really make things simpler IMO.

Looking forwrd to seeing WSB 3 keep up the good work.

Hi!

I am a big fan of WB and I like most of the ideas posted here. But I would really like to see TRUE WYSIWYG editor this time. It would be easiest for the user if page editing would be done in frontend, or at least there would be this possibility. So I suggest that the editor (like FCK) would be loaded straight into frontend template with all frontend css enabled. The width of the editor area would be equal to the containing element ( DIV preferred ) width and the height would change according to entered content. I think this would really be something special and extra handy. What do you think of this?

I'm sure something like this has been mentioned but don't have time to go through all the pages right now.

The features I would like is Menu Editing through Admin CP.  So you don't have to go into the code and set things up how you want even though its not that hard.

A block editor thing.  Like you can manage the order of blocks and make blocks all from Admin CP.

Then one last thing Make it easy to bridge with other scripts. Like MyBB so when I finally learn php I can just make a bridge for it  grin .(Or even better just include full featured forum module but thats more work than its worth if you ask me.)

I have two things that i would love to see.

The menu built up by widgets like in Wordpress.
Then you can have a widget for your Pages and then be able to place other widgets
in different places on your website. So basicly the addons like you have it today but a easier way to implement then.

One more thing would be to be able to change headerbanner och websitecolors from a easy backend menu.

I would also like to have a user regestration where i as admin have to active the account before usage.

I would like to see a better form of backups. I think it could be something unique that WB3 can offer that other CMS's do not offer or offer poorly.

What I am picturing might be difficult to code but is NOT fancy like wikipedia revisions. When a users goes to a page there will be a box at the bottom that will let them restore the page to a previous version. This would be nice in case someone does an edit saves and then goes to the frontend to see it wasn't what they expected and it ruined everything. In a "panic" they can go back to a previous version of the page.

The easy way to do this would be to save a different version of the page every time. However, I am not sure if the database size increase will justify this safety net... hey that is a good name. Maybe you can call it "safety net."

The proper way to do it is incremental backups.
rsync does incremental files transfers. http://samba.anu.edu.au/rsync/
Rsync is normally thought of as transferring files but a project called rdiff-backup uses the rsync library file to achieve incremental backups. http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/
If this feature is even something you might want to consider then maybe you could use rsync or get coding inspiration from it.

I feel an integrated easy to use incremental backup would place WB3 one step ahead of the competition.

I would like to:

- Be able to have something bigger than a module installed (maybe we can call it WB-Part) that can be reached through admin with an icon/flap beside pages, media, addons etc. When entiring this there will be global configuration-possibilities so when adding this "WB-Part" to any page it will use the global prefs. This would be great for a customer finding maybe a product database, messagecenter (if multiple forms ar on the website maybe all stored posts can be found here), forum so one dont have to go to that specific page. On the page though, when you adding the section there can be some prefs regarding language shown.. also the "WB-Part" has to consider the languge the page are configured to have.

- A CODE module that can be for all type of scripting and text with syntaxhighlighting and change "non english" letters to its HTML-version.

- Be able to copy several pages and subpages (branch of the page tree) to a new location..great when adding another language

- Themable backend

- Reusable sections, so one could reuse a sction on another page

- Visibility mode to sections (using the default for pages)

- Fast AJAX admin GUI

- The ability to apply a new template and new groups (rights) to several pages at once.

- A standard WB installation could have WYSIWYG, CODE, GUESTBOOK, GALLERY, FORM, NEWS, INLINE WRAPPER, MENU LINK, DOWNLOAD, USER and VISITOR STATISTICS, PAGE CLONER, PAGE COPIER, TEMPLATE EDIT, LANGUAGE EDIT.

- More multilanguage possibilities exept full UTF-8 support.
http://www.gnu.org/software/gettext/
http://www.poedit.net/

- Handle multiple domains
That means to have the ability to handle multiple sites.

If you need help for the Caching, please contact me.
I wrote a very good caching-mechanism around a wsb page. It is very performant.
Page loads about 70 times faster than withoud Cache. It is very easy to customize.

Have a look at the last lines of Source-Code on this page: www.jesysshop.de.
There you see the average load time with cache, and the average load time withoud cache.
This are live values, because i log the page processing time in a DB.

Cache time for eachs site is set to 10 Seconds (for testing) for all pages.

If interessted, contact me at this page:

I´d love to be able to upload an entire folder of images/files to the media folder via the WB backend instead of selecting multiple files one at a time.
also would be nice the implementation of widgets (wordpress like)

I hope I'm not too late for this... anyway I would like to suggest a pagination/tabs category feature for the backend. If you want to create a 500 pages long website with manu sections, categories and sub categories you'll end up with a rather long tree and a very long list of children-parents to a certain point when you don't "like" putting more content and it becomes rather a tideous task rather than "fun".
If it would be possible to help the tree structure with defining "sesctions" or "pages" - where you can put categories the work will be a lot easier.

My suggestions :

- Add a download module that you  can enable or not on the installation (and other modules)
- Make an ajax menu that you can expand and collapse
- Simplify the show_menu2() function (make it customizable via admin !!)
- Make a multilingual website easier !!
- Keep simplicity !

and :

actually when i migrate a website, i must change all pictures URL in FCKeditor !, URLs should be relative !

Thanks for your work !

During the last year that I have been working with WB and I have implemented quite a few new features. Some of them were requested by the users and others simply came up during the administration of the system.
We have started with WB 2.6 last year and then updated to 2.7 already.
Some of the changes were done in 2.6 and then taken to 2.7 with quite some effort. I always install and test anything new on my local server before moving it to the WEB.

In order to avoid this when eventually going tp WB 3.0 I would like to emphazise taking the following improvements in consideration:

1.    We were faced with the problem when users were setting up new pages and  making a mistake. In order to delete such a page, the user must be a member in a group having delete permission. But a user being a member in such a group, could delete pages that he is not the owner of.
We have implemented a change allowing a user deleting any page that he is owing, regardless of the group.
But, after thinking about this later on, I realized that it would be a good idea allowing the admin change the ownership later if required for any reason. This we have not implemented yet.

2.    Another issue was, that we could not install WB due to the safe_mode set to "ON" on our server. The webhoster wouldn't change this for security reasons. In our case, the webspace is provided by the hoster at no cost for schools, so we are kind of tied to them.
In order to be able to install the system anyway, I have changed the installation routine for installing modules and templates. The modules and template packages (zip) must be uploaded via FTP into the WB/temp folder. The script will now look in the temp folder for the packages and list them in the selection boxes for installation.

3.    Another issue related to the safe_mode is, that users can not upload anything into the media folder although creating new folders works properly. This has let to quite some confusion for the users. We have disabled this particular upload function and don't even show it any more.
By the way, we have done the same change in the FCKeditor also since I have read that there were some concerns about vulnerability. I believe that it was because the uploading of possibly infected files.
This feature should be optional in the option settings.

Note: We wish to stick to safe_mode being "ON" for security reasons and because it makes life a lot better concerning vulnerable modules like FCKeditor, Xinha etc.
As a matter of fact, any module allowing uploading files is a potential securitty risk, so it should be avoided.

4.    When using the search function in the front end, the resulting list normally shows the returned pages by name but also the related change information (changed by whom at what date and time). In our case the users didn't want to be shown in the result list. Making changes in the dministration part regarding "search options" didn't help much.
Therefore we have implemented some code in the search.php letting the script check a config variable in config.php which is used to switch this on and off.
This feature should be optional in the option settings.

5.    Recently I picked up a nice idea that a new WB user was asking for. He wanted to be able allowing only certain user publishing pages. I have implemented a change allowing only dedicated groups publishing pages. With a new checkbox in the group admin form we can permit this permission to a group now. When setting/changing options of a page, the related function will only show up in the list, if the user is having appropriate permission being in the proper group.

6.    Last I have a recommendation regarding the admin-tools option in the backend. I have been using phpMyAdmin and also Webadmin as filemanager on the server side. Making it easier for the webadmin, I wanted those tools show up in the admin-tools list after making the required entries in the database. But since the applications were not dedicated to work in the admin-object environment, we got some problems.
As a solution I'm doing some preparations regarding the HREF settings in the index.php before passing the info to the template.html file.
Actually I'm telling the template whether to show the tool in the "_parent" or "_blank" target window and now it works.

OK, the above mentioned features are working properly and we really wish to keep them. It would be nice if they could be taken in consideration during the development of the new WB-3.0 .
Of course I could give you more info regarding the coding if you are interested.

Best regards and good success with your work
Heinz.

Hello Heinz,

to overcome the safe mode problem for WB 2.x series, one could think off implementing a PHP based FTP layer which takes care about file uploads as some users are not familar or do not have access to FTP at any time.

Have created a admin module which adds one of the PHP based file managers webadmin or quixplorer (see help site) to WB quite a while ago (2.6.4) for a customer. Not sure if I still have a copy of it to share.

If you can create a zip package of your entire WB installation or create a diff merge package based on the actual WB 2.7 release, we could have a look on your modifications and try to implement some of your ideas even for the 2.7.x branch. Just send me a personal notes via the forum.

Give option to replace the creation of physical pages in the pages folder with a redirect to a 404 search.

What do i mean?

Well the user enters in http://www.mywbsite.com/apage

Becasue the page dosn't physicaly exist you would normaly recieve a 404 error but you can use .htaccess (This is why it should be an option) to redirect to a 404/search page. ( http://forum.websitebaker2.org/index.php/topic,9976.0.html )
.httaccess can pass the requested page name to the 404 page, and it can then check the database for a page of that name.
If that page exists then show the data from that page else it can show a search using the requested page name as a perameter.

As it would be a rewrite redirect the address shown to the user in the address bar would still be http://www.mywbsite.com/apage

Benifits:
No physical creation of pages needed (safer)
Less permissions problems
A pages folder would no longer be required.
Would resolve some issues with php safe mode
When a page is not found a search is shown to the user.

Problems:
Not all servers allow use of or access to .httaccess therefore it would need to be an option to switch between physical .php pages in the pages folder and this method.

I have already created a 404 search mod here: http://forum.websitebaker2.org/index.php/topic,9976.0.html

Hello,

WB3 does not make use of the /pages folder anymore but uses rewrite-module. Ryan plans to store all data in the database to give control about who can view edit data and not to run into problems with safe mode. Read through the documentation available on the WB3 project site (follow link projects in the top navigation menu).
